The Leonard Fairclough Memorial Gardens

The gardens are a memorial to one of Adlington’s famous sons.

Leonard Fairclough was born in 1853 in Adlington. He was a stonemason, and in 1883 he set up in business on his own, initially carving funeral monuments. He subsequently brought his son, Leonard Miller Fairclough, into the business which was renamed Leonard Fairclough & Son. They gradually moved into general contracting building their first bridge in 1905. From 1917 the business was know as Leonard Fairclough Ltd.

Leonard Fairclough Senior was Chairman of the business until he died in 1927, and was then succeeded by Leonard Millar Fairclough until he retired in 1965.

The company developed into a national civil engineering firm, and also entered the house building market.

In 1982, Fairclough’s merged with William Press to form AMEC, and subsequently they have moved their offices away from the area.
